Biggest Loser + Deals = Fun

February 4, 2009

So many people have entered my giveaway and I’m so excited to be able to giveaway something that I feel has helped me become more nutritious, and that is saying a lot. I am the queen of fast food, and going to the supermarket is hard for me because I think that the labels would never tell a lie, which is not true. Remember to enter by posting a comment on this blog if you haven’t already!

Most of you know I have a love for the Biggest Loser TV show. Last nights episode was another great one, but I really felt bad for Carla. She wanted it so badly and worked SO hard during the entire show. Where did the producers ever find Joelle? The yellow team and pink teams had it right. “Whenever Joelle opened her mouth whatever came out didn’t make sense.” She was spouting off about going to a higher intensity. What in the world was she talking about. Granted it showed her wandering the gym and never really ‘doing’ anything, but that could also be how they wanted to portray her. Either way, I’m glad that Carla can do it at home, and someone please get Joelle some help!

For working out, I’m still sore from the half this past weekend, but I have vowed that tomorrow morning I’m going to go for a short three mile jog and take it really easy. It’s hard for me to run ‘easier’ than my normal pace, and I hope to ‘learn’ how to do that during my training for my upcoming marathon. I need to realize not every mile needs to be working hard and that sometimes, just getting out there and increasing my endurance and mileage are what I need to succeed.

So today I found a whole bunch of workout stuff on Sale from a bunch of random sites. Enjoy!

It’s Dri-FIT with a stand-up collar that looks sleek wherever you decide to wear it. So here is the long awaited review of the Nike Hatphones that I recently purchased here.

I am not going to lie to you, I was very skeptical of these hatphones to begin with, but obviously that didn’t stop me from buying the purple one at the bargain price of $15.97. I didn’t really know what I would get with the hatphones as I always complain about the Nike.com site being very vague and un-descriptive and hard to understand. Normally priced at $60, I figured it had to have something special to make it that price but I honestly had no idea what to expect. Even after much researching I didn’t know if it was actually a beanie with speakers that would play my ipod, or if it was just a hat with an ipod holder.

Photobucket
Low and behold the hatphones came yesterday in the mail. I think they are going to change my winter running life. It is by far the most amazing contraption I have ever seen or used. The hatphones has a little pocket inside the hat that holds your ipod. If you don’t have the nano sized ipod it also comes with a cord to attach other sizes of ipods. This inner pocket also has a mesh window on the outside of the hat so you can ‘mix your own tunes’ as you run, which basically means you can change the song, or change the volume on your ipod without having to take off the hat. Inside the hat, next to the ipod pocket, it has a cord in which hooks up to the ipod and this cord is what connects it to the speakers. YES! I said it, speakers in the inner ear section of the hat.

Photobucket

So after ripping open the box and giving it a test run in my house which seemed to work fine. This morning I awoke to this :

Photobucket

FOG (not smoke!!) Perfect weather to try out my new hatphones. Even though the hatphones had already exceeded my expectations, I didn’t know how good it would stay on while I was actually working out, if I would be able to hear the speakers, it they would stay on the right place on ears. Many questioned to be answered, so my research continued.

I started off my run, and the had definitely did it’s true purpose of being hatphones. It kept my head super warm and my ears were also very warm as well. The hatphones never slid off and I didn’t have to continually keep tugging it down over my ears or forehead either. The speakers were very loud and I could easily hear my music during my entire run. The ipod holder inside my had didn’t bother me at all, I forgot my ipod was even “attached” to my head. The turn wheel is easy to use and there is even a little extra room in the hatphones for the Nike+ system.

The speaker system stayed in place and were very comfortable and didn’t bother me or feel heavy at all. I was worried the hatphones would feel cumbersome, or uncomfortable, or even become to tight on my ears but this was not the case at all. I also was worried that I wouldn’t be able to hear the music out on the main street with many cars and other things going on around me, but the music stayed consistently loud but I was still able to stay alert and hear what was going on if for some reason someone honked at me.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Please don’t judge me in these pictures! It was early and I just woke up. :) Overall the hatphones worked GREAT, exceeded all my expectations, and I would give it the following grades.

Comfort:
A because it was comfortable and did what a hat is suppose to do, keep
you warm.

Stay-on-ability:
A- because it stayed on for almost all of my three mile run, and stayed
in a consistent place on my head

Coolness Factor:
A+ because what is better than having your own speaker system on
your head

Usability:
B because for me, the fleece lined inside is almost a little bit to warm
for me, I wish it was just made of all spandex

Sound:
B+ because some songs seemed a little louder than others, but that
might also be to my downloading habits

Overall:
A- because it is a great product, at a great price, and is super cool and
fun to have on short and longer runs. It seems durable and also very
well made.
You still can get yours and they come in either white for $19.97, or the purple one like I got for $15.97. The shipping is inexpensive, and it took a week to get to my house. Be sure to pick one up here. You won’t be disappointed. Hurry, I’m sure the stock is limited! Also there are some other hatphones that can be found on the Nike site, that are still around $50-70 dollars, but seriously for the amazingness that is the hatphones, I would almost be willing to spend that much on them anyways. They are really a genius item, and especially with the holidays coming up, think of any runner in your life that might want their own hatphones.

Check back in tomorrow for an update on Amp’d Abs and how sneaky I was during the class, and also a great running book review! Starting the day after Thanksgiving the RUNNERS CHRISTMAS LIST OF 26.2 things to get for your running buddies, friends and family members will be posted. There are exactly 26.2 days before Christmas the day after Thanksgiving and I’ll be busy posting EVERY DAY with great and thoughtful finds for runners, walkers, joggers, and exercise groupies would love, along with little doses of my life, which I know you all love. :)

xoxo
**UPDATE** Amy from 26.2ers told me that this hat would be great for races that enforce the no headphones rule… (SCORE! but I would NEVER run a race without headphones, are you crazy people!) Also Ryan from Caught on the Run! asked me a question about how the music projection for people around you while wearing the hatphones. I responded to this immediately and am sorry that I forgot to include this in the initial report! They are actually not very loud for the people around you at all. I brought the hat with me today to work and we just did a test that if I was using the hat in a completely quite room and the person was standing about 4 feet from me, he could hear the headphones, but not the song or make out what song it is. I had it at the maximum volume and though very loud for me, my coworker couldn’t make out the song still. He said it seems like, “your headphones are just really loud.” If you were planning on using it anywhere else besides outside, like a gym, I feel like you would be totally fine to use it and people wouldn’t think you are crazy at all, and couldn’t hear your music to be offended. (if you are listening to offensive music) Hope that helps! :) **

Didgeridoo

November 19, 2008

Yes, you heard me right. If you watched last nights Biggest Loser episode, you know that Ed said that they would be in “didgeridoo” if they lost. What was he talking about? Oh Ed and Heba. This is a didgeridoo… So how would you all be in there?

Photobucket

Anyways, I was a little shocked at the outcome, and though Amy C. was my hero last week, I don’t know if she made the right decision this week. I do admire her ability to ‘forgive and forget’ so to speak with how she kept Vicki after how many times did she call her a backstabbing B? And taking a bite from the Apple? Seriously Vicki is on some type of drug, I tell you.

I will really miss Coleen on the show, and oh by the way, what happened to individual play. Amy C, the moment you fall below your own ‘blue team’ is going to throw you under the bus no questions asked. Bob even was shocked that she sent Brady home, but seriously Bob, she wants to win Biggest Loser, not allow the Blue Team to win. It’s one person who wins, not teams. Anyways, enough venting about Biggest Loser.

Amp’d Abs was really good on Monday, and I did my 20-20-20 and I really feel that it gets a lot of my muscles working and my heart rate going, which is really the key to any work out your going to be doing. I wasn’t sore after the Abs class Tuesday like I was the week before, and I feel like it’s really helping tone. I forget how many different things you can do that really work your abs, including planks, and many different ways of doing sit ups. Tonight I have Amp’d Abs again and I’ll probably do a 30 minute run and a 20 minute bike. Watching them do spin yesterday on the show made me want to get out there and get working out hardcore again.

I am going to run outside tomorrow morning for the first time since the fires happened. The smoke and ash have subsided so that means back out to pound the pavement. It’s only until something gets taken away from you that you realize how much you miss it. What a feeling it is to have that brisk morning air nip at my cheeks and cut through my clothes into my bones. To be able to be outside when no one else is around, it’s irreplaceable.

Today my hat will be delivered! It seemed like it took long enough, so I finally tracked the package this morning. I am so excited to try it out and I’ll let you know how it goes and if it really works as well as the Nike site said it would.

I also found on the Nike site that in their sale section you can purchase shirts from many of the races they’ve put on. So even if you weren’t able to get into many of their sold out races you can still get the t-shirt. Kind of cheating, but oh well, if you really want a shirt they have some cute ones. Good luck on maneuvering that site though, it’s quite the confusing and unorganized site.

I am kind of in a funky weird mood lately. I guess growing up means some things must be let go, and thought it’s hard, I know that it’s a fact of life. I think I’m realizing some peoples true colors, and though painful, I know that it’s for the best. I never thought I would be thankful to the blogging community, but I am glad that everyone is so supportive and has such good advice for so many different things. Who would have guessed it!

Stay out of the didgeridoo!

Thursday Goodie Bites

September 18, 2008

So my cousins and I have this saying that something that is a small dessert like object it is called a “Goodie-bite”. We figure it’s still a goodie, even if we are limiting ourselves to just small bite. In our dutch family there are many treats we refer to as goodie bites. :) Today is filled with goodie bites on the Chic Runner, from fashion to a few cool tips.

First off though, I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful get well wishes. With about 10,000 mgs of Vitamin C floating through my system, 200 oz. of tea, and of course NyQuil for good nights sleep, my seal cough is slowly going away. This leads to another interesting fact though. Because of my run down state I have not ran this entire week. I realized that if I continue running, I will make myself more sick and not properly allow healing. While talking to one of my friends who knew I was sick they said, “You are either deathly ill, or healthy, there is no in between for you.” Which is unfortunately very true. So I figured I’ll run a long run on Saturday and just start fresh next week, and work hard, instead of doing three weeks of crappy training, because I would continue to be sick. We’ll see how that works out.

Yesterday after work, I was walking to my car, and it was the most beautiful Southern California running weather, and I wanted nothing more than to go to a jog. Unfortunately, I knew that this would only hinder my getting better process, so instead I endured the pain of getting my almost unibrow waxed. (Okay just kidding, it wasn’t even close to a unibrow, but I’m paranoid and it was getting beyond plucking repair. I like to think that in my diseased state, was too weak to pluck, or you can blame me for being lazy.) So next week I will be able to enjoy the fresh air and nice breezes on my evening runs and with wonderful looking brows… :)

Now for the goodie-bites. Lookie what I have found.
First off we have the Adidas’s Women’s Soft Touch Pants.
Photobucket
They come in Pink Cherry/Black combination and are simply delicious. I have a pair like these soft touch, and they are not lying about the soft touch. The pants are reversible ClimaLite® material and are suitable for running or jogging. They have mesh inserts on the face side and solid fabric on the reverse allow you to customize your protection based on weather and level of activity, which is a huge bonus. Flatlock seams for reversibility and comfort ensure a chafe-resistant time, another big plus. They have wonderful features called pockets, shocking I know. Instead of being 54.99, they are currently on sale for 19.99.

Obviously everyone knows I’m obsessed with Nordstrom, and I have an undying affection for Nike as well, so therefore this precious find screamed my name… The Nike Modern Fit Jacket.
Photobucket
I love this jacket for so many reasons, first off the price. It was 75.00 and now it’s 49.90. Sure it’s still pricey, but I know for the price I’m paying I’m getting a lot. It comes in two different cute but not obnoxious colors and I can feel this working for a run, on my way to the gym and even over jeans in the fall and winter months. It has a nice shape to help the fit of the jacket, not making it boxy like some workout jackets can be. Pockets again are a huge plus, and the spandex in it, means it will fit again and again, even if I decide to take some time off running. (HA!)

Next we have this little thing that Starbucks introduced called the Power Protein Plate. It basically has all my life staples in it, including cheese, an apple, a bagel, peanut butter and grapes.
Photobucket
Now it’s 4.95, which is a little pricey, but at the same time, it’s on the go, easy to eat and is super tasty. Just make sure the sprig of grapes is ripe, and not ‘sad’ as some websites have stated some of the plates to be filled with ‘sad grapes’. I wouldn’t want anyone to have sad grapes and blame me! The plate has 330 calories with peanut butter, 260 without which is about one-third of your daily protein intake.

Also another food tip from Eat This, Not That! (my favorite book of all time) Swaps Section.
You can eat two Mc Donald’s Egg McMuffin’s for the same amount of calories as one sesame seed bagel with cream cheese.
Photobucket
It may be shocking, but it’s true, and that is the exact reason why I love this book. I used to always think that a bagel with cream cheese (okay, maybe the amount of cream cheese I was putting on was a little unnecessary) was much better than eating something like a McMuffin. Wrong! That’s what the book taught me in so many different ways. It’s so helpful to keep around, I swear. So the book is not only great because not only because I am obsessed with Egg McMuffins, but because it reflects what we think is the key to successful weight loss: satisfying your cravings with smarter choices, not eliminating the foods you love altogether. So another plug for the book, I know, but I’m shamelessly a promoter for it, it’s amazing.

Hope everyone has a great weekend, and next week something big will happen at Chic… besides me giving a review of the new oatmeal at Starbucks! :) Get Excited!

All Things Apple…

September 11, 2008

Yesterday was a big day for the iPod community as Apple had it’s tech conference releasing information on many of it’s new products. Mostly, these conferences are super hush-hush, and this one was no different. Though I did follow the live blog of http://gizmodo.com/, which was very entertaining as well as informative, I’ve done some sleuthing on my own to find out what is key to the running community about these reinvented Apple Products and also included some pictures.

First off we have the new iPod nano, which now comes in nine amazing colors. Obviously I’m grabbing the pink one when the checkbook allows…

Talk about stopping traffic, these babies are as bright as they look and there are a couple new cool features, which includes a new curved all-aluminum body style and a glass screen. It includes the new Genius feature, which is comparable to a personal DJ by creating play lists and finding songs in your personal library that go together. (Running play list anyone?) Also it has the shake feature, which I have found to be fun on my iPhone, that shuffles your music for you. At initial thought, I think this feature would be great to shuffle, but then my mind thought about running, because of the shaking movement, does that mean your iPod will constantly be changing songs? Something to definitely look into, but I doubt Apple would make such a silly mistake as that. They look great though, and are compatible with my much loved Nike+ System as well. Starting at $149 for an 8GB isn’t too pricey, so that’s another plus.

Secondly, the released the new iPod Touch which is the one that looks like exactly like the iPhone, but isn’t a phone. Anyways, this one has a sleeker design, and also has (drum roll please) Nike+ BUILT IN! Amazing, if you ask me, but at a costly $229, that is a pretty expensive system for a ‘running iPod‘.

Photobucket Image Hosting

Unfortunately, the only iPod to have the Nike+ application built in is the newest iPod Touch, and there are no known applications for purchase or free for the old iPod Touch or iPhone, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the iPhone app sometime soon!

Both the new iTouch and iPod are also sleeker and slimmer and Steve Jobs called them the “Funniest iPods Ever.”

And about the iPhone, I love mine, it’s simply amazing and I recommend it to anyone. :)

Another thing that goes with iPods is obviously accessories! Accessories are what make anything happen, so Apple doesn’t fall short of amazing there as well. Apple was of course prepared and already has the new armbands available for the new iPods.

Looks just like the old one, but a must buy if your are going to the gym, seems to also be good to keep it from getting scratched as well. Funny though, Apple released all these new colors and the armbands are all white and cover up almost all the color. Those are $29
Photobucket Image Hosting
Also they released new earbuds and they are a steep $79. They have much improved sound and claim to also drastically reduce unwanted outside noises. Also these new earbuds has a stainless steel mesh cap to protect the special components from dust, debris, and lets be honest here, earwax.
Photobucket Image Hosting
There is also a remote located on the cord of the earbuds that adjusts volume, play/pause, and next/previous. Pretty cool, but still, $79? Whoa Apple.
Well that is my recap of all things that were noteworthy yesterday. All these products can be found at any Apple Store, http://www.apple.com/, or any electronics store.
